Introduction to Surfing in Arachon

Tucked between the famous Dune du Pilat and the pine-scented Landes forest, Arcachon sits at the southern mouth of one of France’s most extraordinary tidal lagoons, and on the doorstep of some of the Atlantic’s most consistent surf.

While the Bassin d’Arcachon itself is sheltered and calm, the ocean beaches, like La Salie, just beyond its southern tip offer powerful, rolling swells that draw surfers of all levels year-round. Whether you’re a beginner looking for your first wave or an experienced rider chasing powerful autumn barrels, Arcachon delivers a distinctly French surf experience wrapped in pine air, fresh oysters, and golden Atlantic light.

Seasons to Surf

  • Winter Season – December to February: Winter brings the year’s most powerful swells to the Atlantic beaches. Crowds thin dramatically, leaving the line-up to dedicated surfers. Storms rolling in from the Bay of Biscay generate sizeable, punchy waves ideal for intermediates and advanced riders. The raw, moody coastline in winter has an atmosphere all its own.
  • Summer Season – June to August: Summer transforms the beaches into a buzzing scene. Swell is smaller and more forgiving, which is perfect for beginners and surf school lessons. Expect crowds, especially in July and August, but the laid-back holiday atmosphere and long Gascon evenings more than compensate.
  • Shoulder Seasons – Mar–May / Sep–Nov: Spring and autumn offer the sweet spot for most surfers. Autumn in particular is exceptional. Swells build with real consistency, crowds have retreated post-summer, and the golden light across the Landes is stunning. Spring is quieter and fresher, with improving swell windows.

La Salie

The ocean beaches south of the Bassin, particularly Plage de la Salie and the stretch toward Biscarrosse, pick up long-period Atlantic groundswell funnelled along the Aquitaine coast. The sandy bottom produces forgiving, hollow beach breaks that reform across multiple sandbars, giving surfers plenty of choice at any given tide.

At mid to high tide, the peaks here can hold genuine power without becoming dangerously steep, making them brilliant for progression. On a good autumn day, expect head-high sets with clean faces and rides of 50 metres or more.
