Introduction to Surfing in Kuta, Lombok

Kuta Lombok on the southeast coast serves as Indonesia’s premier surf progression hub—a compact area with 15+ quality reef and beach breaks within 30 minutes. Breaks from beginner to advanced all channel into a similar area, creating the ultimate surf ladder.

Unlike Bali’s crowded Kuta Beach, Lombok’s Kuta offers beautiful reefs, stunning, less crowded beaches, and complete surf infrastructure just 45 minutes from Lombok Airport. The area combines high-performance waves with tropical rice terrace scenery and authentic Sasak village culture.

Best Season to Surf Kuta Lombok

  • October to April – Beginner Recommendation: (Wet Season/Peak) The Indian Ocean swells take a step back. Waves become more forgiving, making beginner beachbreaks and intermediate reefs the highlight of this time.
  • May to September – Alternative Recommendation: (Dry Season) Bigger Indian Ocean swells suit advanced reefs, although inside rollers are suited to beginners and intermediates.

Recommended Surf Spots and Beaches Around Kuta, Lombok

Tanjung Aan

Our beginner recommendation is Tanjung Aan. It is a mellow A-Frame, with rights and lefts, that provides a perfect shape for beginners to intermediates.

Alongside being a reef and sand bottom, it sometimes protects those just starting out.
