Introduction to Surfing in Terceira
Terceira feels a little like stumbling onto some secret surf mission in the middle of the North Atlantic. It’s one of the Azores islands, way out there between Europe and the States, surrounded by nothing but the Atlantic Ocean.
The waves consist of some punchy reef setups and some fun beach breaks. Summer gets smaller and softer, more longboard vibes, and conditions can be hit or miss, as it is generally in the Northern Hemisphere during the summer. You’re not getting waves every single day, but there are plenty of windows, and when it lines up, it’s pretty special.
As well honestly, even when it’s flat, Terceira still delivers. You hike around crater rims, dive volcanic tide pools like Biscoitos, although I think this cliff jumping is a bit out of my comfort zone. Besides the crater rims and cliff jumping you get to wander the old streets of Angra do Heroísmo, eat ridiculous fresh seafood, and just post up. It’s like a surf trip mixed with a mini adventure mission.
It’s not a high-performance, tubing wave every hour destination. It’s more about chasing whatever the ocean offers, and soaking up everything else when it doesn’t. At the end of the day…you are catching a session in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Best Season to Surf in Terceira
Best Season for Beginners
Spring season or Summer season. That is April to May, or June to September. Softer waves all the way around will allow for some longboarding sessions and fun weather.
Best General Surfing Season
The best season to surf Terceira is fall through winter in the Northern Hemisphere, roughly October to March. That’s when the North Atlantic turns on, sending steady north and northwest swell straight at the island. You’ll want a good wetsuit, obviously, as the weather is quite cold and you’ve got to be ready for quick weather changes, but the payoff can be solid.
Spring feels like a calmer transition. From April to May, there are still pulses, fewer crowds, and a mix of fun, workable days. It’s not as heavy, but you can still catch memorable sessions.

Concluding Notes on Surfing in Terceira
Overall, the experience in Terceira is unique. The general vibe in the Azores is eccentric in that its one of the few island chains, or islands themselves, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The waves, are also quite well, so a handful of fun sessions is definitely in order. So, I would highly recommend this location for a potential surfing session. Its worth the send.
